Gave first bottle of pumped milk today and LO sucked it down. I was secretly hoping she wouldn't like it at first but glad that DH feels like he can make her happy now. So pedi said she should take 2-3oz per feeding but she gulped down 4oz and still seemed hungry. Does the same, cant over feed a BF baby apply when they take it from the bottle?
Don't remember if I asked this b4 but is anyone tring not to use pacifier? We haven't used one yet, but I think we will need one to use bottles because he drinks them so fast he is not satisfied and I have to nurse him right after to get him happy
Babies aren't able to control the flow For a bottle like they can for the breast. I would do some research in paced bottle feeding. Kellymom.com has some good information.

You can overfeed with a bottle and I think it's pretty common especially at daycares where they are used to formula feeding. There's a page on kellymom.com about paced feeding to prevent this. Basically you hold the bottle so it doesn't flow too fast and pause several times. I think it says to make the bottle last 15 minutes or so. The bigger problem with overfeeding IMO would be that you'd use up your pumped milk too quickly.

I really wanted to avoid it, but in the past few days we have been able to use it to soothe her for a hot minute and save my nips when she wasn't really eating. Pediatrician said she has no problems with it and that research shows it doesn't really affect bfing. We will still try to use it sparingly, but guilt free when we do.

Same thing I just suggested to vern-go to kellymom.com for paced bottle feeding. General speaking- yes, you can.
And just a general tip- this type of thing is going to come up a bunch as we go back to work. Lots of babysitters don't understand how to feed breastfed babies. For instance, breastmilk changes so you don't need to increase ounces. Babies are also not able to control the flow of milk so when they get a bottle it's like drinking from a firehose. I would work with someone you trust to help determine how much milk your baby actually takes during a feeding. That way when day care says they are giving him/her 5oz (or whatever) you know they are overfeeding and it's not because you can't keep up with your pump. Make sense?
I could not for the life of me remember which boob Jake was supposed to be on, even if it was like 10 or 20 min later. Then I downloaded the Feed Baby app. Thank you, technology.

I got a Medela manual pump today because M hasn't given me much pumping time. I was able to get 1.5 oz sitting next to him while he played in his playmat! The ability to quickly pull it out and pump is really going to help I think!
oopsiedaisies, did you say you used shield for 4 months? I am looking down the barrel of this situation m and am wondering if i will ever be able to nip? Right now i have them to heal but i don't know that my nipples will ever protrude enough. What happened or changed ?
I did use them for 4 months. I didn't let it stop me from nip'ing though. I just would put a blanket on to get latched and then remove it. I always wore layers for nursing. Literally one day I pulled my boob out with her in my lap ready to eat, leaned forward to grab the shield off the table and she latched on. We never looked back. I was shocked because I'd resigned myself to using a shield forever. The best thing to do is just keep trying to go without it...we tried everyday. Now 2 yrs later my nips are less flat, but still are flatish. I just make sure that I get it as 'perked' as possible and try to get it sandwiched as much as I can to make it easier for this guy to latch.
Checking in to whine a little bit! Cluster feeding afternoon from hell. I thought today would be easier b/c DH would be home but no. LO started feeding at 1pm and just let up (almost 7:30). At least I had entertainment with reading the FFFC thread! I didn't start crying until about 6, so I consider that a win.
ETA: DH did keep trying to take him so I could eat, pee, etc and LO was rooting so hard on DH's chest, which he normally only does when being held by a woman, never a man.
Cluster started 130 -4, totally ridiculous,he would nod off for 5 minutes & as soon as i put him down- forget about it mom. No baby wearing for you today, go lay down, now

ampaints I was debating getting a medela manual pump. Is it easy to use one handed? I have the manual component of the medela symphony from the hospital, but it's definitely not a one hander. I was hoping to use a manual while BFing on the other side. Is this possible? I hear it works pretty decently for a manual.
jgesi I have the harmony and was never able to use it one- handed successfully. I needed one hand to hold the flange in place and the other to pump. I also didn't use it very often, so maybe with practice you could do it one- handed?

I picked up the harmony at Walmart . No regrets. Easy . Helps with engorgement and drawing nipple out.
I know it's against the breastfeeding gospel but I felt so bad...
LO clusterfed probably from 6-10pm today, and just kept crying and crying because there was no more milk in my breasts, at all. after the 4th hour of him sucking and continuing to bawl, I gave him 2 oz of formula. He is now happily laying on my chest.
You fed your child. That's what you're supposed to do. We're not here to be dicks about formula supplementing, or using formula exclusively. You fed your child. That's the important thing.

I guess it's mostly frustration on my part... if he's feeding that long with no results shouldn't that be telling my body to make more?
Felt the same way when out of frustrations gave my boy a bottle this am after cluster feeding all night. I have been so tired the past few days I just couldn't do it anymore. DH didn't get the hint tho, I had wanted him to take DS and let me sleep a few hours. I laid down and less than an hour and baby was all tears again. It's been a hellofa day (he just won't go the duck to sleep)

So after complaining this morning that feeding wouldn't stop, my babe now won't eat more than a few minutes before falling back to a deep sleep. Off to take advantage of said sleep but of course now worried something is wrong. What a mind duck this all is for me.

I have the opposite problem of most. Super slow let down which frustrates baby and me. He latches and bobs around for 5 min every single time he eats before staying on and actually eating.
brassyclarinet for us the last feed before bedtime is usually 2-4oz of formula with a boobie top up which makes baby full and happy. It works for us because by the end of the day I get to a point where I can't handle the night time cluster feeds. It's already been said but you feed your baby, you can't do any better than that!

Can you get a hand pump and use it until let down? Obviously not practical long term, but maybe for times he's more tired and frustrated, like MOTN?

brassyclarinet, I get the guilty feeling--I had to start supplementing yesterday. BUT LO is doing so much better, and, as previous posters said, we are both feeding are kiddos--that's what matters. Nothing to (reasonably) feel guilty about
Dangit the 5 week growth spurt/cluster feed hell has begun. We are on hour 6 of eating right now. Goodbye nipples, it was nice knowing you. Please sleep tonight kid. We have lot of plans tomorrow.
I had my favorite burrito for lunch, and had noticeable gas as a result. Didn't think much about it until I had a little fussbucket baby. My friend (mom of 3 bf babies) asked what I had eaten earlier, and it hit me! Beans!!
Hugs to mama's struggling with guilt. Getting our babies fed is the only point! No judgment matters! We're all just getting to the end goal of healthy kids, one way or another.
I think I have a little milk blister on my nipple. I will try to take care of it tomorrow, I can't handle doing anything right now in the MOTN. Anyone else dealt with this?
