Not that I have ANY experience, but maybe try the Summer Infant Swaddle Pod? I bought one to try and it is very little it's for babies 5-10 pounds and is a zip up so it doesn't have all that extra fabric.
Since so many of us have outside babies already (!!!), I thought an ongoing stupid questions thread was in order.
I'll start. D was 6lb2oz at birth, 5lb12oz at discharge. All the swaddle blankets we have seem way too big-- I don't like wrapping him a thousand times, the extra fabric makes me nervous. Any swaddle blanket recommendations for small babies?
I've been putting Lucy in newborn size Halo sleepsacks swaddles. I use fleece at night and cotton during the day. She was 5 lbs 14 oz at her well check yesterday.
I've got a question for you guys... At what age do you start using wraps/carriers? I have an ergo with a newborn insert and a Baby K'tan wrap... Just wondering when I can use them.

From the start with the k'tan for sure. I found the soft structured carriers I wanted to use it when he got slightly more substantial around two weeks old. But that's just me.
As for swaddles we used swaddle pods or woombies which are the same idea. For maybe two weeks and then did swaddle me's. I did find the pods he could get his arms out the neck hole so they didn't last too long.

I would start from day one. The Ergo I waited till maybe 6 weeks. I would try the k'tan before 8lbs to see if it works. We will start with the RS.
@usernamesarehard have you tried just a regular receiving blanket? We had a TON of these with DD and she was too big so we had to go to the A&A, so they might be small enough for you.
mrsg80intn I used the moby from day 1. I think as long as you feel like they are supported, you should be fine. I did not start the infant backpack carrier until a little later when she could hold her head better, but I felt like the wrap could be adjusted easier to seat her in a good position.
Um, how are you bathing your newborn without getting the umbilical cord wet? I want to wash his hair, so not just a sponge bath.
Do you have a newborn tub that fits in your kitchen sink?
We would wrap him in a towel and put him in the dry tub and then just tried to wash his hair that way, the towel would keep his body dry.
If you received a Peri bottle from the hospital - pro tip: use this as a rinsing device for hair. It's brilliant. You can aim and rinse very effectively. I still use it on DS.

I bathed my lo before it fell off. The nurse in the NICU did it so I figured it was okay. I also looked it up on the Internet and it said you could bathe them with it.
My question is how often are you bathing your newborn. I was doing every other day. Then switched to everyday because I thought that would help his diaper rash but I think that is drying out his skin. FTM and have no idea how often I should be giving him a bath.

Are you folding them in half? Gracie was 5 lb 5 oz when we came home. We fold the A&A in half on the diagonal to make a triangle, place her in middle, pull one side over and tuck, flip the bottom up and pull the other side over and tuck. The stretchiness helps with the swaddle and I just wrap all the way around.

I dont have a baby yet, but the nurse at the hospital tour said not to bathe them until it was healed. I have never heard that so I was going to ask around for when the time comes.
Interesting. The nurse at the hospital actually bathed him while we were there and washed his hair, lol. Of course i didn't watch though.
We were told sponge bath only until the cord fell off.

Just a few (2-3) times a week here. His last bath was Sunday in the hospital. It really does dry out their skin, like you said. Get some good lotion to use on them too.
FFTC?? - we've bathed (bathtub, post stump fall off) her once since she came home on the 20th and done two baby wipe baths. Her skin is really dry and sloughing so I don't want to dry it out more. I need to get better about every 2-3 days.
Lucy has had 3 baths in a week. We get her hair by holding her head under the faucet - H holds her while I suds and rinse. We have a veggie sprayer type faucet on our kitchen sink that we use.
Any bfing moms pumping and doing bottles yet? I pumped 6 oz this morning, so I'm thinking about having H give her a bottle tonight.
.
I am. For some reason she really isn't interested in nursing. We try. She latches and sucks like onces then is done. And is usually screaming. Then I pump and give her the bottle and she sucks it right down no hesitations and is so happy. I'm thinking we will be pumping and bottle feeding. I kinda line it because MH is able to help and be apart of it. He really likes being able to feed her. Plus I know exactly how much milk she is actually getting. Very helpful
We might not be the ones to go by, but in the beginning DD got a bath 1-2x a week. Until they are moving and eating I feel like they just don't get that dirty. We wiped her down with a washcloth before the stump fell off, did her hair the same way (soapy washcloth and "rinse" with clean/wet washcloth).
Thanks everyone. I think I will just do 2-3 times a week. Since I stopped using baby wipes his bum has gotten better. Part of me thinks his skin was just to sensitive for them. The nurse had told me to just use paper towel and water. Seems to work well. He still screams like I am trying to kill him when I change his diaper. When does that normally end??
Another question... If you were doing a meet and greet for your new LO how old would you wait for them to be? Since I was in hospital for a month before he came I never got my baby shower my friend was gonna through so she suggested a meet in greet once he was born. Just not sure if I should wait till he is a little older or not.
lepeters, I think the screaming during diaper changes lasted about 3-4 weeks for us.
We did a party for DD about 1.5 weeks after she was born (we don't do showers). It was hectic, but also easy because she just slept through the whole thing while me/DH/my mom/MIL held her.

I personally have been advised by the dr. to wait until 6 weeks, but that's due to DS's kidney issue.

We are out of necessity. DS lost quite a bit of weight after birth due to his eating laziness and what not. The LC suggested that when he's tired and keeps falling asleep to limit his feeding to 10 minutes per breast and then pump the rest. I'm supposed to get 1 1/2-2 oz. per session and if I don't, I supplement the rest with formula.
lepeters, that all depends on how big of a party you plan on having. Also, it depends on how crazy you are. By crazy I mean a paranoid about sickness. I am not planning on taking my baby to any large gatherings or out in public all that much until she has her 2 month shots. I am so scared my baby is going to get sick bc it's cold and flu season and let's face it, people are fucking gross. They cough and sneeze and don't cover it. They also tend not to wash their hands all the time. I know baby will get sick at some point and that being in too sterile of an environment is not a good thing, but Idgaf. Outside of family and super close friends I will not be having many people over for a while and will limit visitors. I especially won't allow anyone to bring their children over.

I thought I was, but now I'm feeling dumb because Gracie is obviously smaller than D is so theoretically I shouldn't have a problem. Hmm. I'll try again and claim sleep deprivation if it works this time.
Don't feel silly, we were trying to wrap my first with the whole square when we got home and couldn't figure out how to deal with all of the fabric so I only speak from experience :-). The final piece would wrap almost all the way around her but it kept it secure when I put her down.
