BTDT Moms: Baby ship has been reacting to wipes so we've been using just wet paper towels. Every time we try to switch her back her bum gets red and irritated again so we stop. Will she always have a bad reaction? Is it just certain brands. We've tried switching around a little but it doesn't seem to make a difference. Our usual wipe was Pampers sensitive.
I just hope she'll be able to use wipes eventually, we stocked up on them. Now I'm feeling kind of dumb for doing so.
She may. Some babies are more sensitive than others. We use water wipes. It is an actual brand that has mainly water and not a lot of chemicals. Target and Amazon sell them.

You'll find a use for wipes eventuall, don't worry. Lo is 3 and I still keep a stash in the car and my purse
If she's super sensitive just keep using water. Also we never wiped after wet diapes, only dirty.
You could also try cloth wipes if you want something really soft. We just washed them with regular laundry (newborn poop is totally water soluble!) Until we started cloth diapers. Just kept a spray bottle of water next to the diapers and wipes.
cheeseandrice, that's what my doctor said today also. "Have you started tummy time, it will help so he doesn't get a flat spot"
ddojsioc, I agree as long as there's no weight problems, don't wake a sleeping baby! My doctor told me once he had gained his birth weight back, I no longer had to wake to feed. (Which I didn't need to because he would wake every 2-3 hours anyway) so now he goes from 7-12/2ish then he wakes to eat and wakes every couple hours again after that.
I'm sorry I haven't been around since baby was born. It's our first night home and first night having her. She was in the nursery in the hospital at night. She wants to eat every 2 hrs, her tummy is making noises and she keeps farting. And if we put her down she starts screaming. Help me . It's night 1 and I don't know what to do
Eating every two hours in normal and good. Try burping her good when you feed her, my doctor just told me today that you want the air to come out the top before it gets to the bottom so make sure to burp good to prevent the gas. And swaddle her so when you put her down it doesn't startle her as bad.
I use gripe water and gas drops here and there if I feel we need it.

km380 I agree with others. Try the swaddle and maybe rocking to help her calm down. The first night's are always the hardest. You will figure her out and it will get better.
We do some diaper free time during the day. I put down towels to catch any messes. we use wash cloths and water only. Make sure the bottom is dried before you put a diaper back on. We put a thick layer of butt paste on before the diaper.
Water & wash cloths to clean - I get the cheap ones at Target. Resinol cream works best (was a recommendation from the doctor when DD's was terrible). You have to get it at the pharmacy counter. Not all pharmacies have it, but it comes in a little white tub. If you cloth diaper, you need a liner.
More of a PSA to the FTMs than a question: LO woke up from his morning nap yesterday with his eye crusted shut and yellow gunk leaking out of it. Don't panic (ahem, like I sorta did)... It's a clogged tear duct.
Clean the eye carefully with a CLEAN warm wet cloth (I also used Qtips for precision), and apply a warm compress to the outer eyebrow area if there's any swelling. Note: eye gunk is IMO the grossest secretion there is. Be prepared to be grossed out.
If you're so inclined, squirt some BM in there too, for its antibiotic properties, and you can also gently massage the tear duct opening to help clear the duct.
Yep! We just went through this last week with DS3. It had me slightly panicked as neither of the older boys went through it. I did the warm wet washcloth to wipe the eye and then took my index finger and rubbed downward from the corner of the eye to the bottom of his nose (along the side of the nose). It seemed to do the trick really well.

., ours only lasted about 3 days total. I think I happened to catch it and start "treating" it crazy early. Like pp said, they can last quite some time though :/

I'm getting desperate with spitting up issues. At night E is a super aggressive nurser and my milk flow is pretty forceful. So she eats, is super uncomfortable (gassy?), spits up, then wants to eat again. On repeat for like 2 hours in the MOTN every night.
I've tried pulling her off the breast when she seems like she's getting more than she can handle, but then she goes bonkers. I usually burp her when she's taking a break.
She gets to the point where I think she starts nursing for comfort because of the gas from the initial feeding, but by then there's just no room left in her stomach so she keeps spitting up whatever she's taking in over and over.
If you have any suggestions, I will be forever grateful. It's a terrible catch-22 - feed her and continue her discomfort and watch her spit everything up, or worry that she's actually hungry and I'm depriving her.
How long should I be letting her sleep during the day. She's 10 days. Nights are brutal, maybe she's sleeping too much during the day? Is that possible this young?
I am a big fan of waking F every 2-3 hours during the day. I want her to eat a d get her calories in during the day. I wake her to eat and then let her fall back asleep if she wants to.

I do wake her if she actually sleeps 3 hrs during the day. She's just up a lot more at night
I think you are doing the right things and as others have said, it's pretty normal and will hopefully improve over time.
Knock on wood, I've had 2 good sleepers (at least G is a good sleeper so far). My only recommendation would be to allow her to sleep as much as she needs during the day but have her do it out in the open, not in a quiet room. I have a couple of portable things for G to sleep in (RnP, PnP cradle, bouncy seat, swing) and they are out in our main family room area so she sleeps with lots of noise (tv, big sister, plenty of talking, etc) during the day.
At night, she's in our room where it's very dark with white noise. I have no scientific backing on this but both my girls have slept well this way. During the night, they'd wake to be changed and be fed and go right back to sleep. I also keep all of the lights off during the changings/feedings (we just keep our bathroom light on with the door cracked enough to see). Not sure how this compares to what you are doing but might be worth a try :-)

Umbillical cord question... M will be 3 weeks on Wednesday... She had an IV in her cord in the NICU so it was pretty dry and seemed like it would never come off. It started to come off yesterday and is now hanging by a thread. I'm wanting to give her a bath soon but know better than to removed the cord till it falls off...
My question is this... The cord seems to have a thread still hanging from the belly button even after it's going to fall off... When will it be safe to bathe her?!?! Do I need to wait till that little string falls off too?

No expert but I think you'd probably be fine to bathe her now and would for sure be good to do so even if the string is there since the bulk of the cord has dried up.
Okay this might be a weird one. Baby girl has recently started screaming/squealing in her sleep. She will let out one high pitched screech that sounds scared, but it won't wake her up or anything. Is she dreaming? In pain? I would think if it was pain it would wake her up? It's very weird and happens every time she's sleeping now, and it worries me a little. Not only because I don't want her to be scared or hurt, but I worry that she's not getting sound sleep.
I bought a 128 count box of N diapers, opened them up and threw away the box, and then about an hour later realized he needed to move up to a size 1. What do I do with them?? Can I donate them somewhere without the box? I would hate to just throw them out.
Women's shelter. Most by me even take open packages.
You could also call L&D at your local hospital and them what local resources there are for new moms in need and they might be able to direct you to a good organization or social worker. For the itty bitty ones DCFS and foster homes might appreciate the donation.

how do you feel about introducing a pacifier? I had to do that with Lo for awhile. It could calm her down a little and give her stomach a few minutes to digest and hre to realize she was full.
(disclaimer - I didn't restrict food from my kid! We were running into the same over-eating/puke/eat/puke/repeat cycle.)
When do babies start being awake and alert more? Not awake and screaming for food or diaper?
Also when did you take your first stroller walk? I'm starting to feel a little better physically and I don't want to miss fall! When is a good time To take a walk? After a feeding?
Seriously I know nothing about babies lol
Whenever you want! Seriously. I remember finally working up the courage at about 10 days pp with DD1 and it was seriously life-changing. The fresh air and physical activity did wonders for my mood.
Take it easy. Go once around the block the first time and see how you feel. Just make sure you give yourself enough time before the next feeding and timing should be fine!
This time around? we've been to Target twice and around the block once, and she's only 5 days old... second kid problems I think I'm going to try and wear her TOTing with the 3 year old too.

You could check to see if there's a diaper bank in your area. They usually take open packs.
Diaper bank or battered women's shelter. Any shelter would take them too probably.

The alertness should increase around week 3 or so. At least that's my experience.
I took my first pp walk the day after getting home from the hospital. We go frequently. I usually feed her & then plop her in. She always naps. Fresh air does wonders. Enjoy!

km380 go whenever you feel up to it. I walked a couple of blocks when F was a week old. Just be careful to not overdo it. In the first couple of weeks I would go to target, take a long walk because I felt ok that morning. By 6 pm I was sore and my bleeding picked up.

True story. I had family come down when he was less than a week old and we went to the outlet mall, all around town, and everything. Trying to keep 2 toddlers in the house and entertained with a newborn is pretty darn impossible.
km380, like pp said, just remember to take it easy. But I'll tell you this, getting outdoors and walking worked miracles for my stress levels and in feeling overwhelmed in general.
TTMA fevers. I know a newborn fever is considered an emergency, and google tells me a fever is 100.4 or above. He felt hot to me so I just took his temp, and it was 100.0. Took it again like 30 seconds later to be sure I did it right, and it was 99.5. I shouldn't be worried, right?
How are you taking it? If those are the temp a rectally you're fine!
For those of you formula feeding or pumping and bottle feeding how do you know how much to give your LO is a feeding. I am pumping and supplementing with formula. Sometimes I will feed him and he will act hungry right after but give it 30 minutes and he is asleep and seems fine. Sometimes I don't know if he is hungry still or just wants to suck. He is also having gas pains I think so he is fussy about that. So it is hard to tell if he needs more food. Up until now he has had good weight gain. By 5 weeks he was up two pounds from birth wait. Just worried of both under feeding and over feeding. I don't want to always revert to feeding him when he is fussy because I know that is not always the reason he is fussy. It just seems like he could eat all day long. Any insight would be great.
