Also, in regard to ring slings - I feel like I am having a hard time getting a good seat for her. It's like she either has a good seat but the fabric is bunched up under her knees causing pressure points, or the bottom rail is smooth under her knees but she's in the sling very shallowly. I watched some videos about pulling the fabric up between her legs until it's to her bellybutton, but I'm like... How??! Any tips or good online videos anyone?
I try and push the knees up above the bum also and pull the fabric from the inside. I just shove my had under the but until it's high enough.
I went to one last week! They spent the first half demonstrating how to use the four main types of carriers they have (mei teis, ring slings, wovens, and sscs), including how to breast or bottle feed in them. During the second half of the meeting people could try on carriers from the BWI lending library or get help with their own carriers (I did both). One tip - people made a dash for the carriers they wanted when the try on portion of the meeting started (at least at the meeting I went to), so if you have your eye on something I would try that on first. If you become a member ($30/year), then you can borrow carriers from the lending library, it's a pretty good deal really. I didn't join, but I did like the lillebaby that I tried on and ended up buying one.
Thanks so much - this is good to know !! I have no idea what I will like so I may just sit back and watch the entire demonstration. Was it a BWI of Central MD event? I am going to the Ellicott City meeting next Tuesday.

I think I've discovered what the problem is -- I'm pulling the bottom rail too tight.

This happens to me too. I've started reaching in between me and baby (I put my hand under his arm and above his thigh) and pulling the fabric up in front of him so it (theoretically) reaches the top of his diaper. It often doesn't get quite that high. But it does help me get a better seat. Also, I feel like sometimes his legs are spread too wide (like, almost 180 degrees); pulling up from his front helps cinch them together a little bit so he can sit down in the hammock, if that makes sense.
Sparkly - What kind of fabric do you recommend for a ring sling newb to use for warm spring and summer weather? I was just checking out the Sakura bloom site and am overwhelmed by options. Other brand recs, or links to specific slings also welcome! TIA.
I would start with single layer linen usually for new ring sling users. It's easiest to break in and learn on. Silk is actually surprisingly cool, but I love having linen slings to beat up. I don't wash my silks, so in the summer when I'm going to be outside, beach, sweating, etc. I usually go with linen. I have both and love silk though... It just takes more time to break in and is harder for new people to learn with, I think.

I lean forward (before tightening), and pull fabric up between our bodies, then kind of smooth it out under the knees. Tighten strand by strand through the rings, don't just pull all through at once.
Anyone interested In anything Tula should ask to join the group "Tula in the know" on FB. They are celebrating their 1yr anniversary this weekend and giving away a lot of stuff to members via raffle! Maybe you'll get your Tula for free!!
For those that joined, the raffles are up to enter.
Here's hoping this string of bad luck I've had can turn around with a free Tula.
I need a Tula. Both toddler and standard please! Dh wore dd2 in our borrowed toddler and omg it was awesome. She's been begging me to put her in the ergo but I typically need dd3 up and I can't do a tandem carry (don't want to). She was sooooo happy to be up. Poof.

Babywearing mamas - what kind of bag do you use with various carriers? I'm getting ready to take both girls out for the first time and wondering how best to organize our stuff. A backpack with a Tula sounds like an over abundance of shoulder straps, but a shoulder bag is going to be too annoying for wrangling a toddler.
I either use my small cross body bag (holds wallet, keys, water bottle and a diaper for each kid) or tuck my debit card and keys in the pocket of my ergo and leave everything else in the car.

That's what I'm going to try. Usually I leave everything in the car, but it's too far to go while in the children's museum. I like the Tula, but dang that pocket is small. It fits my phone. And that's it.

Well my bank account is not going to be happy with me after I fall all the way down this rabbit hole, but Ok, here it is my first attempt at a FWCC! First reactions: I LOVE how close and secure my 8w baby feels. (I know there is issues with the top layer but I watched a video about putting in a burp cloth for cushion, so I'll try that next time) I imagine like anything it will get easier with practice, but it definitely was A LOT of work to get there, a lot of pulling and tugging and shifting things around. Also, holy sleepy dust! He was out well before I had the whole thing tied off!
When I get her in it seems like one leg is always higher than the other - any pointers?
Also, for whatever reason my threading keeps getting twisted, not sure if its the way I am pulling it or not?
This actually still happens to me a bit, depending on how you tighten. If you lift baby's butt while you're tightening, and also feed the extra fabric toward the rings rather than just pulling, that should make it more even. It's sort of hard to explain without showing.
ETA for the second question: for one thing, you want to make sure the sling is basically fully adjusted before you even put baby in. Make sure the fabric is spread out evenly and without twisting on your shoulder and back, and around the front, leaving a pocket just large enough to fit baby's feet through the bottom and sit down in it. I then lean a little forward to pull fabric between us, making sure she has a good seat. Next, tighten a bit along the top rail as needed so sea not falling back. Then feed any extra fabric from under her toward the rings (if you mostly have it adjusted ahead of time, there shouldn't be much, if any), adjust the bottom rail, and then go strand by strand through the rings and back to the top rail where you make sure she's fully secure. The whole time you are tightening make sure you are slightly lifting or pulling baby toward you, so fabric sides easily through the rings. Too much pressure/stress is not good and can weaken the integrity of the fabric over time.

thanks for the pointers! I will try again tonight! Hoping that I will eventually get the hang of it!
