Okay this could have been written by me today. Wont nap during the day unless she's on me, the second I put her down she wakes up.. her first night stretch has shrunk down to 3.5 hours (she had been getting to 5 or 6), and after that its just fussing and constant waking. Also, shes eating CONSTANTLY during the day, like every hour. 10 weeks today. Any insights? Leap people, is this a leap? Im thinking oddly timed growth spurt. Who knows.
M is 10 weeks today too and Wonder Weeks says we have 2 days left in our 2nd leap. I don't know what's better at this point. More sleep > falling asleep on their own? I've tried reading HSHHC but I just don't think its straightforward or I'm too sleep deprived to implement it. He's fussy but not colicky (anymore I don't think). He's just irritable after the first stretch wakeup/feed. And he's not even that hungry because sometimes he only takes 1-2 ounces, so I know he COULD sleep through the night.
R is 12 weeks. This started for us around 9 weeks, so I held onto hope that we had the 2nd leap to blame, but it's long gone. We are on the 3rd leap and I've noticed no change...I'm done following the leaps! He also only really eats once on the MOTN...so frustrating that we could be getting so much more sleep! I've also read all the sleep books again (did with my 1st, too), and none of it helps at this point. I'm at a loss. Just hope every night that it will be different!

You should try asking Snapdragon on May 15's page. She seems to be their resident sleep expert.

clbehenna, have you already asked the M15 page for advice? I skimmed some of it but not all. What happened with your 1st btw? When did he/she start sleeping better?

I was reading through their sleep thread, and Snapdragon had made a comment about her kids being sleep trained at this point, so I asked her what she meant by that. Basically, she said she had gotten them to the point of being able to self soothe when they're put down drowsy but awake. That's not happening over here.
From what I've seen on the sleep thread and their MOTN thread, there are a ton of people going through similar situations, especially now that they've hit the 4 month wakeful period. That's why I've decided this IS my 4 month wakeful...because I can't imagine 2 (or more) months of this!
My first LO had colic and reflux and was a terrible sleeper, so I read HSHHC and a couple other books. When he turned 6 months old and was still waking up 6+ times a night, we decided to use the Ferber Method to sleep train him. I'm hoping to avoid that this time, but DS1 was sleeping 6pm-6am after 3 nights of sleep training, so if we get to that point at least I know it can be worth it!

I do remember you asking that now... Why do you think your DB can't do drowsy but awake?
And wow, I keep hearing Ferber stories where the babies are STTN in just a few days. Seems totally worth it to me even though I'm sure it's hard!
You're living my life, but slightly better! Last night was the first night in a week that the first stretch was more than 2 hours (it was 4). I'm trying to make sure he eats ever 2 hours during the day so I can be sure he's not too hungry at night. I was also trying to put him to sleep earlier, but after going to bed at 8:30 last night, he actually slept decently...not sure if that's a possibility for you! Hopefully all of this horrible sleeping now means we get to skip the 4 month wakeful...that's what I tell myself to get through the day...as LO is asleep on my chest because I was desperate for him to take a decent nap...

We share the same baby.
Let's hope it's a 10 week thing and it improves. I'm not even contemplating sleeping through yet, just more than 3 hours in a stretch would be nice. And a sleep in her own bed during the day? That would be great too. I don't ask for much, right?
I've stopped talking to people about this IRL because they're all super helpful: yeah, I know it's hard, my son only sleeps midnight to 6am for the second stretch and I'm exhausted. Bite me.

Can I ask what the 4 month wakefulness stuff is all about? Does anyone know? I keep wondering when/if we are going to change the time she goes to bed (to earlier)but she's been sleeping through the night since she was about 6 weeks and recently she's been in the pack n play and out of the snuggler thing so I'm not screwing with that AT ALL.
She goes down at 9:15-9:30pm and sleeps till 5:30-6:00. We don't swaddle at night or at naps because she's in daycare. I know she takes cat naps only during the day..usually 30-45 mins every couple hours and is eating 3.5 ounces about every 2.5 hours. I haven't read up on anything much because she seemed to get on a schedule rather quickly but I know that could change at any minute.
How do you get your LO to go to sleep drowsy but awake without having them scream or just totally skip their nap because they will not fall asleep?
Well, the idea is that if you don't wait too long (so DB isn't over tired) they won't scream. And I think that they will eventually fall asleep if you leave them there. So I'm not sure what the answer is if your DB would just lay there, not sleeping, for an hour or something... Maybe to just keep trying?
If I hit the not over-tired sweet spot my DB will "yell" in protest for a few minutes and fall asleep. He's swaddled though, and I'm really scared it won't work anymore when we stop swaddling.
I think an option with screaming is to calm them and put them back down repeatedly until it sticks.
I think the problem with this, and other sleep training type ideas is that they take lots of work and many of us are still doing anything we can to get a little sleep. I think everyone will be more into it in a month or so...

DB slept almost 8 hours tonight! Holy shit!
I, on the other hand, woke up once to pump (at about the 4 hour mark), stayed awake for an hour waiting for him to wake up, and am now pumping AGAIN because of how much built up from him sleeping that long.
I'm 99% sure he'll be up every hour after this so that my night will completely have sucked. But I'm still super glad he slept so long.
I have an alarm set for 430 every morning to get up and pump. I started using my fitbit again yesterday, so I decided to reset the silent alarm that was previously set from 530 to 430. How did I sleep through 2 alarms??? I woke up 45 minutes late. I really have to start going to bed earlier so my body doesn't put me in a coma.
LO went through some shorter stretches of sleep this week at 10 weeks, too. She did 9-1:30 and 2-7 today, though! She's also been nursing pretty consistently every 1.5-2 hours during the day, which has been exhausting.

Ugh I'm going through this 10 week thing too. So annoying. I've been so lucky with J sleeping through the night since she came home. The past three nights she's been waking up a few times to nurse and wanting to sleep in bed with me. Sigh. Indoor it passes soon.
Does anyone else have an issue with their LO wanting to comfort nurse at night? R slept great last night, for him..., but then was attached to me from 4:30-6, and was super fussy if I tried to soothe him any other way. He really needs to start taking a pacifier...

Maybe I'm doing it wrong? I just tried again for DS's first nap. I always put him down for a nap after 1-1.5 hrs of wake time, before he gets fussy. I swaddle, put on white noise, and rocked him until he was very drowsy. I put him in his crib and his eyes immediately pooped open and he started screaming. There's no fussing that I can just wait out...just immediate screaming. I picked him up to try to calm him down enough to try again, but it took 20 minutes to get him drowsy again. At that point, for the sake if my toddler, I just needed him to sleep!
Yes, Ferber was so tough, but DS1 was a completely different baby after we did it. He was so happy once he was getting sleep!

4 months is a common time for babies to start waking up more at night. I think it's the result of 3/4 month growth spurts and brain changes. From what I've seen in the May board, it can start earlier...and last past the 4 month period...or you can skip it altogether!

My DB screams sometimes too, but will still fall asleep within a few minutes. Maybe you could try letting him scream for a little bit? The other thing I'm wondering is what would happen if you didn't rock him first... Maybe the transition to being put down is too jarring after he's comfy in your arms. Like what if you just swaddled him and put him down after an hour or so.
Also, I don't think all babies are the same and that there's some perfect way to do it that will work. Just thinking out loud and if anything works, great!

This 10 week thing blows. She can't take a decent nap, takes an hour to put to bed, and is eating at 3 am instead of 5 (and then impossible to put back to bed, again.)
It's only 740 so it's not quite MOTN. But Owen just went to bed...which means he'll probably wake up at 5am for the day...and we have company and are going to have more tomorrow. Not to mention that his longest stretch is always first and it's only 3.5 hours. Anticipating a crappy tomorrow.

I did something both fun and stupid and went out with my girlfriends until now (1:30am). When I came home DH was feeding DB the first feeding of the night, so now I'm pumping and dying to go to bed. I really hope he sleeps 4 hours after this or I'm going to feel like shit tomorrow. Actually either way I will. Ugh!

Well hello there! Haven't been in for a while but with a babe that ain't feeling well and just wants to cuddle ... I am here!
carolyngrace - hope you get rest! First time I went out and came home SO was feeding her and I was all..........she's usually sleeping! He had me take over so that he could go to bed. Ha.
We have been crib only since Friday night. I want to cry. LO is three months and his feet are starting to stick out the bottom of the rock and play. I'm still going to use it in an emergency I need sleep situation but I'm working on getting him to be ok with the crib. Neither of us are happy about this arrangement. He is sleeping like crap and so am I. Boo!
Can you froggy style his legs so he fits in the RNP? I think LO is 24 long but she fits w her legs in frog position
I tried swaddling one arm out last night and she slept so much better then usual! She usually wakes at 2, 330, 530 but this time she slept from 8-330. And woke up for the day at 6. yay!

I just noticed today that Oscar has started rubbing his eyes when he's tired. First of all, this is SUPER adorable and makes me feel like he's a genius. But more importantly, it's a sure fire sign he's tired (sometimes I second guess whether fussing is because he's tired, even though it usually is).
So tonight as soon as he rubbed his eyes (6:45) we headed towards bed. I had him laid down by 7pm and he fussed/cried off and on for about ten minutes, and was out!
Still putting off the swaddle transition for another week or so I think...

So Jazz just had two decent nights (or maybe one, now I cant remember) after several terrible days and nights. Did some 3.5 and 4 hour stretches back to back with one hour wakings instead of her lengthy dramatic two+ hour MOTN fuss. Today she WOULD NOT NAP. Then this evening she fell asleep in the car though.. at about 7PM (usually goes down for the night after 830/9PM). We totally just left her sleeping in the car seat, and now its 930 and she's still asleep. Im kinda dreading what this is about to mean for our night time sleeping, but I really didn't think I should bother to wake her. FX she either wakes up right now, or sleeps til at least midnight.
periwinkledaydreams, FX for your night! Maybe this will be the start of some earlier bed times
Thanks Maybe our bedtime will shift earlier, I don't know. She usually has a late afternoon nap and wakes around 6ish, and Dad gets home from work in that same time frame and plays with her. Our bedtime routine grew naturally out of that timing.
Do you think earlier bedtimes help sleep in general? I don't genuinely know.. Im shit for routines and schedules and really just go with the flow!

I'm not sure! I do feel that my DB has been happier and more rested since bedtime shifted earlier, but he started doing that naturally on his own. FWIW, he often wakes around 6pm from his last nap and we still do bedtime around 7/7:30 (most of the time. he's still young enough that nothing is set in stone)
So pissed right now. Got B to sleep at 8:15- he's been sleeping until about 4 am lately, so I was looking forward to that stretch. DH and I get into bed at 10:30. DH decides to check B's diaper after I repeatedly said not to wake him. Does it anyway. DH "tries" toget B back to sleep but then realizes he is hungry since he hasn't been fed since 8pm right before I put him down. Guess who is nursing and guess who is sleeping right now?! UGH
