Wow so much awesome info on here! I think I am going to set up an appt with the LC and figure out this pumping thing-- I am at a total loss of where to start, when to pump, and when to introduce a bottle/ pacifier? I have read kellymom and have tried to figure out how to build up my supply before I have to go back to work. Any advice would be great!
My pediatrician at the hospital said it was fine to use a pacifier starting whenever. Its helped a few times, getting LO to latch on...i'll get the pacifier in his mouth and he'll start to suck, then I switch on him.
We've also had some laching issues although they are getting much better. I'm using a nipple shield for now, and hoping my very flat nipples start perking up with the pumping and nursing. At the beginning it was really tough to even get him latched on with the shield, so thrilled that he is doing well with the shield so far. Later this week i'm going to hopefully go see another lactation consultant to see if we can start making progress ditching the shield.
My nipples improved once we passed the engorgement phase. I use a Shield mostly, but I am more and more successful without one.
Anyone have any tips for getting DD fed and latching during the engorgement phase? She was nursing well until 12 hours ago. Now she just latches on for a few seconds, pulls off, and cries. I'm so sad and not sure how to make sure she gets fed. I dont really want to supplement. Please help

Is it hard for her to latch because you are engorged? Maybe try warm compress and hand express a little bit before giving it to her?
If it's a forceful let down I'm not sure what to do there :-(

I'm not sure. I think it's because of engorgement. I ended up bringing back the nipple shield and it worked for this past feed. We will try again in 2 hours! I've been hand expressing, using ice packs, and pumping for 5 minutes to try to relieve the engorgement.

When I was engorged, the nipple shield was my best friend.
She started latching again without the shield for the past two feedings. Yippee! I'm also a dumb ass who has been struggling with pillows to get her into position instead of using my brest friend pillow. I thought it would hurt to use it with my insision. Nope, it is amazing how much better our positioning and feedings have gone now.
This advice is amazing. I've been using a hot pack on my breasts before and after nursing and then massaging the breast while Korbin is feeding. I have a forceful let down. If you Google "forceful letdown" it has a link to a la leche league website that gives tips and advice for such a thing. I'm mobile or I'd post a link, also, I just googled it or I'd let you know how well their advice works lol
Back on the shield again. Ugh. I hate having to pump afterwards. Such a pain esp when I'm home alone. I hope we can get this fixed soon. Appointment with an LC next Monday.
How do you know if you need to limit what you eat while breastfeeding like dairy, caffiene etc? Just trial and error?
I have been wondering about this too.
Kellymom.com is a great breast feeding resource. I have been on there everyday.
My DD was milk protein intolerant. For this, you can notice symptoms including colic, fussiness, crying, explosive poop, green/frothy poop, stringy/mucous poop, blood in stool. It takes 4-6 weeks to completely clear LOs system but you usually notice improvement in symptoms in 1-3 weeks.

I asked the LC this at the hospital now when I had DD. With DS, i was told to avoid gas inducing food, like beans and broccoli for at least 4 weeks, so DS would get gassy/colic-y. I deprived myself of yummy foods. This was 4 years ago.
This time, she said eat what you want. No need to take certain foods out to avoid gas/colic. I was surprised. She said that is "old" instruction and things have changed. Im still iffy about it and eat "gas inducing foods", just not as much or often. DD has not had any problems with gas/colic. I'm not a big caffeine drinker, and not sure how it affects bm or production, but I would limit or avoid it.
I would check with a LC about it though. Or maybe someone here could correct me if I'm wrong.

Sometimes when baby eats he sucks so hard that it sounds like is gulping alot of air. No pain with latch. When he does this he inevitabley has more gas. What do I do to get his to not gulp at the breast?

This is a great thread. Thanks for starting it aggiebug!
I'm trying to get this pumping thing right (pumping 1x per day, doc recommended to use as supplement). It seems like I may need a larger flange? The pump seems to start out well and I get almost an oz of BM from each side, but about 1 minute in it seems the nipples are getting stuck in the tube and it's no longer effective. If I turn the pump off for a bit then start up again, I get more milk for about 5 seconds before getting stuck again. Am I guessing right about needing to go a size up? Or maybe I shouldn't expect more BM to be extracted when I'm BFing the rest of the day too?
Breast milk question... I didn't plan on exclusively pumping right after having Brandon so I've pretty much used all my bottles to store and freeze milk. I was finally able to get some storage bags last night. My question is, can I thaw the frozen milk to put into to bags and freeze again or would that make the milk bad?

It is not recommended to that and reference the milk.

Warm compresses/washrags will work much better than cold packs. Warmth opens the flow and loosens fatty milk. Ice packs keep it solid, and won't help to move it down.

I'm pretty much stuck using the shield and being a slave to the pump. Not sure if this belongs here but I have a question about poop! The past week since we met with the LC DS has been at the boob more and we noticed a drastic change in his dirty diapers. They are dark green and no longer mustard yellow. What the heck is going on?
I'm no expert so maybe someone else might know better but I think that means he is getting mostly foremilk and not the fattier hindmilk. I believe this is one of the issues with the breast shields. you are probably pumping all of the hindmilk.

The milk is just traveling through his system faster, so this could mean he is getting a lot of fore milk and not enough of the hind milk.
badw0lf I agree with PP about the foremilk and hindmilk. DS had the green poops a couple times too. Now he only has one breast per feeding (which is usually all he needs). Poop has been normal ever since.

badw0lf we were dealing with this too. I also use a shield. The pediatrician told me that if it's green and mucousy it's most likely an intolorence. If it's green and frothy you're probably dealing with a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance. Massaging your breast while he eats will help loosen up the hindmilk faster. I've also been told that if he isn't finishing a side, you can pump that side directly after and then use that milk to supplement.

Can an intolerance develop at 3 weeks 5 days? He's been on my breastmilk (mostly from a bottle) since birth with no issues until now. I guess I'll have to take a closer look at his next diaper to determine if it's frothy or mucousy.
Yes it can. I would even say it is probably more likely to develop after several weeks than to be present from the start.
After finally getting back on track with breastfeeding without a shield (it was a pain to keep track of at night) I wake up this morning with a fever and pain in my right breast again. It feels like I'm engorged, but he ate on that aside most of the night. I'm thinking my mastitis is coming back. What the hell am I doing wrong?
Pumping question: Does anyone know of a good explanation of how your nipples should look in the horn when pumping is occurring? I don't think the standard ones are the right size, but I can't tell if they're too big or too small. It looks right before pumping starts, but doesn't look right during pumping.

My nipples get huge during pumping. Much larger than when feeding.
