Should my nipple still be round after feeding? It tends to be flat in the side he's licking. It doesn't tend to hurt too much during the feeding.
I've wondered this too. One side stays pretty round but the other gets flat. I just thought my breasts were weird!
My LC calls this lipstick nipple and says it is a sign of a shallow latch. A bit of flattening is not to big a deal when they are real young so long as your nipple isn't being damaged. If you are in pain or bleeding though I would consult a LC to work on a deeper latch.
When your LO's are tired are they very restless at the breast? I can't decide if DS is just so hungry he shakes his head and is constantly squirming and restless at the breast or if it's because he's very tired and needs help to fall asleep.
I notice LO does this and also just gums at the nipple if she has a burp to get out. She acts frantic to get the nipple but won't latch.
My LO frantically licks and gums but won't latch after hours of cluster feeding. I assumed it was because my breasts are so soft that she has trouble latching. DH thinks that maybe her mouth is tired or sore. I wish I knew what was going on. I am still able to hand express milk when it happens, so it doesn't mean I am empty.

Thanks, I do seem to remember my lc saying lipstick nipple now that you mention it.
I've been trying to align his nose with my nipple to get a deeper latch, but then he turns his head to the side and I have to try and get him to open wide enough again while I'm leaking everywhere.
ETA: it's not painful, though I want to make sure he's sucking effectively.
I'm also wondering about when he tucks his bottom lip in. I try to pull it out, but then again it doesn't hurt.

It is frustrating working on a latch while leaking like crazy. DS has literally licked leaking BM off my nipple instead of latching. I keep one end of the burp cloth (actually a cloth diaper) tucked under my breast and wipe off my breast / his face as necessary. Once or twice I've hand expressed a bit into the burp cloth to try to help him latch (the joy of flat nipples plus engorgement) but it kinda breaks my heart to waste BM that way haha.
I've had to practice his head in one hand and my boob in the other to get a good latch. It's not an easy thing to coordinate. Good luck!

Oh yeah! I keep a big receiving blanket over my lap/pillow since he spits up a bit too, and I tuck some of it under my boob. Haha! Hopefully he'll get the latch down on the left side. Of course it's my injured side. Stoopid cracked nip.
So, I've started pumping in order to get a stockpile set up for when I go back to work. We are exclusiveky BF. I'm wondering who else is pumping and nursing and what kind of schedule you're keeping in relation to pumping and nursing and how often you're pumping... What's working for you? I pumped one Breast while DS was nursing the other and got a measly ounce. Argh.
I was told that your milk is replenished an hour after nursing. I'll pump then. Or I'll feed her then shower while she's asleep then pump whatever milk comes down.
Just venting... I just watched MIL give DD the bottle NOT paced like I instructed. DH yelled at her and she just argued with him. *sigh* why can't she get it through her head it's not formula and it needs to be given to her the way I ask.

Even formula fed babies do better with paced feeds so they eat what they need and not just what you put in the bottle.

Your breasts are never really empty. They let down milk and then start making more. You can pump Right after feeding and you'll get a bit smaller amt and may have to pump and wait for a let down.

Getting an ounce from one side when you are also nursing is not bad! I know some can pump and get tons of milk but for first pumps an ounce is pretty normal. As you do this and get used to it the amt will go up.
Also when pumping in addition to nursing you will start out just getting some cause your body doesn't realize it needs to make milk for baby and the pump both. It will get the idea to make extra with some consistency. Also when you are at work pumping instead of nursing it's a different ball game too

Thanks!! That's great info to know! How many times should I be pumping per day? Is there a certain "time" to pump or not to pump? I'm also trying to figure out if I shoukd space the pumping out over morning, afternoon, and evening.... Or cluster it all in a few hours.
