Our pedi recommended Enfamil vitamin d supplement. Just curious if any of y'all are using this (or a different vitamin d supplement) and when do you give it? Before a feeding? After? Some other time of day?
We were given a prescription for some vitamin d drops by the pedi. DS gets one mL a night right before bed because that's when I take my medicine. I usually try and do it in the middle of a feeding. He doesn't seem to enjoy it too much, so I always let him wash it down with some milk.

Add me to the sitting of my counter club! Ive had them for two weeks and never given it yet. He choked on gripe water the first time we gave it to him so Im paranoid now

I haven't started with DD yet, but I rememner with DS there were some brands you used a whole dropperful and some you used just a single drop. I definitely preferred the single drop ones. You can just put a drop on your nipple before you start to nurse.
I ebf, and my pedi never suggested vitamin d supplement. But at each checkup the intake nurse always asks if DD is taking any. Was there a reason your pedi recommended them?
I believe vitamin D is recommended for all babies bc they don't get enough sun exposure since they shouldn't be sitting in the sun and it's winter. Even adults should take a supplement (not that I do). I find on the nipple the easiest or on the finger.
I;'m also on the till using the shield train. There is a lactation group on Sundays, and I keep meaning to go but haven't made it yet because of visitors or laziness. This weekend I think I have no excuse.

Oh good idea. We got the single drop kind and I was wondering if that would work. Trying to aim it in his mouth doesn't. As a heads up for anyone who tries that.
DD gets enfamil vit D drops once a day. No set time just when I remember. She seems to like the drops as she will stop crying and suck it down when I give it to her.

I would specifically ask if you should give it. The pediatrician told me that BM is notoriously low in vitamin D probably because most people are vitamin d deficient. Vitamin D is a big deal for brain development so it's worth asking. Formula has added vitamin D so formula fed babies should be fine.
Our home nurse came today and she said LO could nurse for 15 minutes on each side when I told her he likes one breast a feeding. How long do you nurse for per feeding?

I'm usually about 10-15 minutes. Pedi said it wasn't a problem. And I only nurse one side.
I also want to know how you know when they are "done" with one breast. I generally wait till he falls asleep then change hime and move to the other. Time can range from 7 min to 20 min per side

I watch the baby, not the clock. Dd nurses about 10-15 minutes, one side only. Except first thing in the morning, she takes both sides.

Me too! He always falls asleep so I nudger him until he wakes up and try to switch it up. He never seems satisfied like he is with the bottle though.
Yeah, with a bottle he will suck down 4 oz easy. then be very happy or tired. I think this is why my mom is convinced I never let him nurse for long enough.

When LO only eats from one side do you pump the other side?
Currently N only eats about every 3-4 hours (even at 2 weeks old. Pedi, lc, etc say it's okay). My lc said that I should stop him after 20 minutes, burp, and switch sides, or try to offer the other side if he stops before 20 minutes so I don't hurt my supply. However, he usually falls asleep after the 20 minutes and won't wake up, so today I pumped the other side for 10 minutes.
Of course he may wake up in an hour and want to eat, and she did offer the one that feels more full.

I try to do that, but then he ends up spitting up and having a hard time burping. I've been stopping him at 20 minutes and then try to offer the other breast when he hasn't passed out.

Do any of you really feel "empty"?
I don't pump the other side unless it's in the morning. I just switch sides at each feeding.
Most of the time, I feel pretty empty. Very floppy and squishy.
DH and I are wondering if LO has a lip tie (he has a bridge of tissue up there and a nursing blister on his upper lip, and his latch is still really painful to me one month in). I called to schedule an eval at his pedi's office. An LC called me back and basically told me that there is no such thing as a lip tie (she's never heard of it?) and what I was describing wouldn't affect LO's nursing or how he latches onto my nipple. This is seriously the third LC who has rubbed me the wrong way, which makes me sad because it makes me very hesitant to reach out to an LC now and I know I need some help with this bf'ing thing (I have loved all of LO's nurses and doctors; maybe I can get some good tips at LO's eval appointment next week).
I'm jealous of those who pump and get so much. I pump both sides and get less than an ounce. I've done lactation cookies, mothers milk tea, pumped after feedings etc and I just am not making enough to keep up with LOs demands. He eats about 4 oz every feeding. We've had to supplement with formula because he lost so much weight and wasn't getting enough just from my milk.
I'm not sure what else to try. If anyone has any ideas I'm open. I wish I didn't have to use formula so much and could make a ton of milk.
Awww hugs momma magsame you are doing an awesome job for your baby. I know formula can be disappointing when you are really trying to breast feed, but it is ok. I am impressed with your effort of trying to get as much BM for your LO as you can. I am pretty positive I would have given up by now and gone to 100% formula.
I have no true advice for you except maybe increasing how much liquids you are drinking a day?

You are amazing with all your effort to keep trying. My supply is ok but even so I have considered formula with how difficult it has been and how it has weighed on my mental state. You are feeding that baby and that is all that matters.
cginge, check out drgaheri.com, I think he has some info on lip tie also kellymom.com. I went to several LCs. Maybe try private rather than hospital based if you haven't already, I saw a big difference.
Re milk regulation and pumping and feeling empty, it all seems to vary still at 5 weeks. An LC told me to think about milk production like a factory rather than a warehouse and it helps. I think I am middle of the road re supply and I pump when I get a chance but try to do so once per day.
Earlier, DH kept telling me he was still hungry but I think he jumps to that if he is not sure how to comfort him.

That's insane. We just had DDs lip and tongue corrected. There certainly is such a thing. Find another LC or ENT or a pediatric dentist. They should be able to help.
Thanks ladies for the support. LO is finally back up to his birth weight 3 weeks later! BF and formula is working so yay! Its been a trying time so thank you guys.

Yay!!! I had the same issues with my LO and it took him about 3 weeks to be back up to birthweight as well. So happy for you!
When your LO's are tired are they very restless at the breast? I can't decide if DS is just so hungry he shakes his head and is constantly squirming and restless at the breast or if it's because he's very tired and needs help to fall asleep.

Sometime if he's too restless at the breast I think he's having a hard time concentrating. Swaddling typically fixes the problem for us.
