Pumping question: Does anyone know of a good explanation of how your nipples should look in the horn when pumping is occurring? I don't think the standard ones are the right size, but I can't tell if they're too big or too small. It looks right before pumping starts, but doesn't look right during pumping.
My nipples get huge during pumping. Much larger than when feeding.
Mine do too, but I'm not sure if too much of the areola is getting pulled and rubbing wrong. I was reading that if pumping hurts, it's not the right size, but maybe that's like the advice that if breastfeeding hurts something is wrong.

Much like feeding, it hurts for the first bit then gets better. If it's constantly hurting, maybe turn down the pump? Or see if an LC can fit you for a better size (or at least tell you if you're doing something wrong).
I've been EBF'ing for 3 weeks. Is it normal to still feel pain when LO latches on?
Does the pain stick around the whole nursing session? Or does it go away after a minute or so?
If it sticks around, there's likely an issue with lo's latch that needs to be corrected.
Initial latch pain that goes away can be normal. You may have a noticeably painful letdown sensation.
The pain lasts for the initial 30-60 seconds of latching on--definitely not the entire time--and my boobs are sore in between feedings still. Maybe I'm just being impatient re: my nips toughening up. I know sometimes he has a shallow/lazy latch but I've been trying to catch it and correct it ASAP.

The LC I talked to said that as long as the actual nipple part is moving freely without rubbing the sides, it doesn't matter how much of the areola gets pulled in. That being said, the standard size given isn't necessarily a standard nipple size. Mine also get bigger in the tube, so I bought the next size up (at Target). I produce more now when I pump and it's not painful now that my nipples aren't rubbing against the sides.
I've gotten really lazy and have been using the nipple shield. DD fights to latch then pops off after 2 sucks if I don't use it. She gets frustrated, then it's even harder to get her to latch. So I just give in and use the shield. I want to stop using it mostly because I'm tired of getting up to wash it every time I feed her. Any tips on how to undo my laziness?

I'm the same way. I feel like I'm not helping DS correct his latch issues because I'm being lazy and getting frustrated.
Me 3! I keep saying I'm going to make an appointment with the LC but two weeks have gone by and I haven't yet. I would really like to be able to not use it anymore. Mostly because I'm terrified to use it to nurse in public. DS is the worst about pulling it off slightly and then dribbling all the milk out. I have to use a rag underneath my boob every time we feed otherwise I would be changing both of our clothes multiple times a day.

Even without the shield, I have to use a towel under kiddo. My hard letdown sprays everywhere. With DD, I used to keep a towel in the car in case I needed to feed her when we were out.

My advice is to just use it to start and try pulling it off after a few minutes. DD is 3w3d now and we are almost weaned off and really just using it in the middle if the night for a few minutes if I am super engorged. I hate that stupid thing for the reasons you mentioned. I'm eventually getting a manual pump and will try pumping off the engorgement instead. Hoping to be completely off it by the end of next week!
Another nipple shield addict (maybe we should make an Ns anonymous group ) . I have been much more intentional with not using it at least a few times during the day but honestly she does so much better with it I have no regrets at night. I am just trying to get her fed and asleep. Maybe soon she will be shield free during the day and we can work on that.
I love this group. Thank you for letting me know I'm not the only one. I felt like I was being shamed for using a shield. I'm more afraid of dropping it then using it in public, but I also don't want anyone to see me using it.
BTW anyone pumping using the Kiinde system? I freaking love it. It's my favorite thing right now.

Re Pump size. seamonster and others, I rotate between different sizes because I think my ideal is I. Between them. My LC said you can rub unrefined coconut oil or even olive oil on the flange before pumping and I do that some of the time. I think using a hands free bra helps to. I sort of rearrange until I am as comfortable as I can be and then the bra more or less keeps it in place

Andplusalso if someone is shaming or judging you for using a nipple shield well screw them. You are feeding your child and if you didn't have a shield you would probably be on formula by now which they would judge you for (and shouldn't) so do what you have to do and stop worrying about others opinions because if their opinion is something other than 'look at that momma doing what she has to do to feed her child' then they suck.
Gah I hate that women feel so judged for every decision they make starting with whether or not they have kids.

Yeah, I've noticed that everything I do is under scrutiny since getting pregnant.

Yes. I hate it. Everything you do will be "wrong" so go ahead and do what works for you.

I know it is dumb. I feeling it was present even before I was pregnant. I swear my coworkers were expecting me to have a kid since I walked in for an interview. Then there are the people who ask why I want to start a family so soon. Umm none ya business (fwiw I am almost 30)

This! DH and I got pregnant immediately after getting married. He's 31 and I'm 26. We get the same thing. I knew I wanted to start a family pretty soon. I don't know why people think it's necessary to force their opinion on how I should be living my life.
The medela shield works well for me. Like aggiebug , I use the shield without any qualms at night. My LO goes from straight passed out sleeping to screaming if he doesn't get my boob asap. Both he and I have more patience during the day in trying with or without the shield but I have come to terms that I am feeding my baby and no matter how we do it, we're amazing and have taken on one of the hardest parts of our lives! I have told my mom how supportive our board is and she said how awesome it is that we are honest here and no judgement.
We are currently using a nuk shield and it seems to be working well! I had a breast reduction 11 years ago and I am fighting low supply issues from that. We are having to supplement with formula now but I am working on getting my supply up. When I pump my average is about 1.5oz total.

My DS is the same way. He goes from 0 to 60 in like 5seconds if he doesn't get the boob right away. This makes MOTN feedings that much more interesting lol. I can't imagine trying a MOTN feeding without a shield right now.

Our pedi recommended Enfamil vitamin d supplement. Just curious if any of y'all are using this (or a different vitamin d supplement) and when do you give it? Before a feeding? After? Some other time of day?

It's definitely been sitting on my counter for a week. I have yet to open it.

Ours recommended it this week at her 1month appt. It not that brand though. It said to either shoot in her mouth or add to a bottle. I added to a bottle around lunch today.

Oh and I'm pumping only but she's been exclusive Breast milk.

Forgot to say we're EBF and that's why the supplement is recommended. We're not having any problems or jaundice.

We have the vitamin d drops too, also EBF. I give it to her after one of her morning feedings--whichever one she doesn't fall asleep at the boob. I tend to drop in a bit at a time with a pinky finger in her mouth to suck on.
