Are you supposed to try and keep baby awake during the day so they sleep more at night?
I go with no. Sleep begets sleep. The less sleep they get the less they sleep. This still applies to my 3 year old lol. What you can do is keep lights on, noises etc during the day and then have it darker and quieter in evening/night.

Are you nursing? It's recommended that you wake newborns up every two hours for feeds during the day. Otherwise, let them sleep!
Yes, I am and she wakes up to nurse about that often and we don't let her go much longer than that. She had maybe 1 or 2 3 hour stretches during the day/night after a long feed. But she just falls back asleep after most of the time. Then in the early part of night, like 9 to midnightish she is more restless and fusses and has more alert time.

Nope. Sleep begets sleep. With DS, we just made his "awake" times very, very different during the day vs. at night. From day one, when he woke at night to eat, we kept the lights dim, voices low, no playing or goofing around, etc., right back to bed after eating/changing. During the day we'd keep the lights on, talk normally, do some playtime, etc. I think it helped him differentiate day/night pretty quickly. Then we just waited for him to settle into his own routine.

My pedi has always been okay with not waking to eat unless they aren't back to their birthweight. However, we EFF so I'm not sure if it's different for BF babies.
I also move baby to her room around 8:30/9 each night. Yes, she'll be up to eat around 11, but I figure the earlier I get used to the routine, the easier it will be for her once she recognizes the cues. At night, she doesn't leave her room.

Our Pedi said (this morning on his rounds) that some babies are just bad at the whole night time/day time thing. He said usually about 3 weeks they start figuring it out more and that you just need to survive and nap during the day until then.

The MWs with both my DDs said something similar - unless there's a weight concern, there's no need to wake baby to feed and I started out EBFing both of them.
I also did/will do dim lights and quiet at night, more sound and activity through the day so #3 can figure out the difference.
When I came home with dd1 I tried waking her every 2 hours to nurse during the day because she had weight gain issues and the nurses at the hospital had me in a panic. All it did was cause anxiety. .I called my mw freaking out because she wouldn't wake up and eat. They had to assure me every 3-4 hours was fine and likely she wasn't hungry and just didn't want to eat yet and let her sleep.
Has anyone given baby a sponge bath yet? I am wondering when we need to do this... When they washed her in the hospital she hated it so much, I am not really looking forward too it.

We've only done one sponge bath and washed his hair once since we've been home and he's two weeks old. I typically just do a little wipe at the end of the day because he gets milk in his chins. His cord stump finally fell off and his circumcision has healed so we'll probably do a full bath some time this weekend and will probably only bathe him about once every couple of days or once a week at this point.

I'd say if baby isn't dirty/smelly, don't worry about it.
Also, sponge baths are super different at home. Wiping baby off with a warm soapy cloth is pretty different then trying to get all that cottage cheesey stuff off! LO might not mind so much.

We did a quick sponge bath at 1 week and will do another this weekend at 2 weeks. Her stump fell out at 1 week, but I think we will wait until next weekend (3 weeks) to try the tub seat, since she doesn't really need to be submerged in any water just yet to get clean.
We just put her on her changing pad, since she is comfortable there, and dipped the washcloth in warm water to wipe her down. I used a little homemade diaper spray (water mixed with almond oil and castile soap) with a cloth wipe on her head and any other areas where she was soiled in some way. Then we just patted her dry and dressed her again. She was perfectly happy, but she is also not much of a crier so far.

The first time was like we were slowly murdering her she screamed so much. The last time wasn't bad at all. The key is to have warm water. I put it in hot (not scalding but on the hotter side of warm) and by the time it got to her it was warm.

We did because she was smelly from spitting up. I made it super quick and she was only upset for a few minutes.

DS also acted like we were murdering him. One day I tried getting an extra wash cloth wet and laying it over his tummy while I washed everything else and that made a huge difference.
Talk me off the ledge - on Monday, my friend came to visit with her toddler. They both washed their hands and my LO was asleep in the bassinet the whole time, so he only came close to her and patted her on her hat once and on her onesie once. Now she texted me that he has a cold today (Thursday). Paranoid visions are running through my head. Help me.

I highly, highly doubt they could have transferred their cold germs. Also the incubation period is not that long and you would see symptoms by now.

Breath hun, your LO is fine.
Thank you. I needed to hear that. ETA: This is the same toddler who gave me a cold and a stomach flu in quick succession in late January - this probably makes me irrationally afraid of him, haha, but also, yes, I was sick within 24-36 hours last time!
I vacillate between wanting to have visitors and get out and be the cool mom who is part of the world and wanting to hide in my warm cave and protect my baby from everyone who wants to touch her. I had no idea I would be so fierce and so paranoid about her!

I have a terrible cold and have been literally coughing on my kid since she was born. She has yet to get sick. You are good!
Our pediatrician's office has a housecall service for newborns (it is sooooooo awesome), so we spent an hour with an RN last night going over various newborn stuff, and I mentioned my concern about protecting DS2 from germs and bugs, esp with DS1 attending preschool and constantly being sick. She said the best thing really is to make DS1 change clothes and wash hands when he gets home, and to make sure that he doesn't touch DS2's hands. Newbies are putting their hands in their mouth, so if you can keep their hands clean, you will probably greatly reduce the odds they'll get sick.
How do you know when to change diaper sizes? Are the weight indicators a good approximation? LO is in NB size for sure now, and I have a spend $50 get $25 off for Honest at target and I think it stacks with their gift card thing which is going on again now... but I'm not sure how many NB we will need realistically. LO was 6 lb 9 oz at doc on weds, she is long and skinny but growing fast.

I would guess at least another month to six weeks.

jewel441 - because you're changing them so often at this stage, I would say stick with the weight range and maybe get one box of Size 1s just to have on hand. However when we got to larger sizes, I started moving up when #1 would get in the upper part of the weight range or he started leaking at night because he needed more absorbency because he slept longer.

We're doing it tomorrow, so 6 days old.
I gave E a bath on Saturday, so he was 11 days old. He cried for just a few seconds. I make sure the water is a tad bit warmer than room temperature and that a good portion of their body is covered in water. I also use a wash cloth and have it laying on their stomach to help keep them warm.
Size 1 diapers fit E better and pick up at 8lbs. Newborn diapers go up to 8lbs I think.
Diaper sizes: it might not just be the weight so be careful buying very many NB. With the small sizes I found that they still fit but the pee/poop blowouts would be every diaper. If I went up a size, no problems. The little ones don't hold very much!

Warm wash cloth perhaps and then a little saline spray on the end of a baby-safe qtip. Just don't shove it in.
